Relax and close your eyes. Start to visualize.
You are standing facing a gate.

Well oh well….it is the gate to the house of your dreams!
The giant steel gates open to reveal the building in the distance. Your dream house is really a mansion with huge gardens. It may take you a while to reach your home but you don’t mind the walk.
The grounds are huge, in a beautifully designed landscape. Pebbled paths lined with bushes of spring flowers. Naked statues everywhere. A swimming pool with inflated dinosaur floats right in the middle. A pavilion sits at a far end.
Next, you come upon three long garden tables set with silverware, wine glasses and soft pink napkins neatly arranged. Colorful balloons adorned the chairs. A small stage to accommodate a sound system is being erected nearby.
Then, you remember. The invitations have already been sent out since three weeks ago. You are expecting guests – your most ardent supporters, friends, well wishes and members from the press. You are having a housewarming party today! Cars are already parked in the driveway.
You reach the foot of your house.
The double doors fling open. Two uniformed butlers stand on each side of the doorway greet you. At the hall, you see the circular stairways leading upstairs but it is the living room that you step into.
Heads turn towards you. The murmur of voices fall silent.
Light music from the grand piano at the far end strains in.
Then, a gathering momentum of *applause*.
You cannot help but smile in acknowledgment.
A multitude of emotions rushes through. Happy with the turnout. Grateful for the love and support from your family. Joyous over how the past year has turned out. Astounded with the attainment of results since doing wealth affirmations everyday! Amazed over how miracles have taken place at each step of the way!
Oh yes, it’s great to reach the pinnacle of your success! It is awesome to finally have your dream house coming true!
A Gift from the Universe?
I am not sure if the above description fits into what you would like for a dream home. How about we do some visualization exercises today? When you are ready, let us proceed.
What if you have a gift from the Universe? What if you receive a landbank of 30,000 square feet to build your dream house….

Now what would you do with the land? Are there any particular features that you would love to have? Tennis court? Infinity pool? Indoor waterfall? Koi pond? What?
Or…..what if you received a gift house from the Universe?

I’ve put a photo on my monitor of the land I’d like to build an environmentally-friendly house. The land is sloped and leads to a small, beautiful, refreshing lake. Quiet days, calm nights, cool breeze and lots of swimming and splashing about in the lake. I’ve got to think more about the house…right now, it’s the natural outdoors that gives me goose bumps!
How about a nice country retreat on 50 acres, lush gardens full of organically-grown vegetables, fruit tree orchards, and a giant shady oak tree for relaxing under. Include a view of the surrounding mountains, a clearwater lake abundant with fish, and a patch of forest.
As you can tell, I personally think the setting is more important than the home itself. I would be content with this setting as described with a modest cabin for living space!
The bigger the house, the less personable it seems to me.
I like a dream house to be live in … filled with experiences, from barbeques to Easter egg hunts, to lazy summer days.
I’ve been designing my dream house and didn’t even know what an infinity pool was until I looked it up after seeing the term in this article. Now its in my plans! Thanks Evelyn.
My dream is to have a “green” house in the northern California coast (Sonoma or Mendocino County). I have all of these water conservation ideas to add to a home. I’m not sure if they are viable, but it would be nice to have the time and funds to find out!
I would like the home to have wood and concrete floors, lots of natural light, totally gourmet (but energy efficient) kitchen, a master bath overlooking the coast/beach, a guest suite, open outdoor space with redwoods near by, large organic garden and easy access to a beach…
Evelyn,
What a nice visualization and you set the mood so well. I’ve have to change the scenery as my house would be on the Gulf of Mexico. I recently did a future visualization and the house I saw was modern looking with lots of glass, especially on the beach side. It also had clean lines and an open floor plan. It had a wrap around deck, white tile floors with geometric, colorful rugs. One area was set up for computer work…all in black and grays, etc.
What struck me about this visualization is that it’s so different that what I thought I would see. I had always seen myself in an older wooden home with lots of rooms, stuffed chairs and furniture with family history. I not sure which is me…maybe both. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of this:~)
Hi Evelyn,
Thanks for the visualization exercise! The houses really look great.
I have a little question though. As I am a Buddhist, I am taught to seek peace/joy from within.. from calmness, and not seek “pleasure” through external worldly things like dream house?
Hence I would like to ask would it be better if we visualize peacefulness, calmness, one-ness at heart instead of using “sensory” objects as a form of visualization/meditation?
Thanks
Cheers
Victor
Evelyn – I have to admit, I blanched a little when I read your post, and was not initially going to respond. But I decided to do so because 1) from what I’ve seen you encourage questioning on your blog and 2) there is such a variety of dream houses being described in the comments. My reaction was mostly because I live in LA, near an area with many mansions like those you describe, and recently read an article on the unbelievable carbon footprint of these homes, the complications it has caused regarding mass transportation, water supply, the electricity grid in the area, and more. With all the Bernie Madoff type headlines lately, I am really questioning my own materialism and the damage it can do, and am trying to ask myself ‘what do I need’ rather than ‘what do I want’ or more to the point, ‘why do I want what I want?’
OK, enough on that, I hope you are not offended because I don’t mean it that way. I welcome any post that makes me think. And I see in the comments that several have described an environmentally-friendly home! For myself, my dream home would be a modestly sized 100% solar-fueled house in the desert southwest, with all native landscaping, lots of double-paned windows to see the cliffs and mountains, skylights, and maybe an atrium for indoor plants (have to use all that sun in that area.) Thanks-
Hi Evelyn! You did such a great job creating a visual and setting the mood. You quite the writer! This article set me to visualizing the home I’d dream of having but even better it helped to reinforce the value and power of visualization. Thanks!
Hi Evelyn,
Okay, my dream house…. would be near both mountains and a lake. Would have a large kitchen, and a study. Beyond that, I wouldn’t want a really big house – something average-sized. In the vein of fun – maybe some room that would be designated as such – a place just for having fun. Through it all, the most important thing, though, would be that my house was also my “home”. Cozy, lived in, real.
And, I really like what Lisa (mommymystic) is saying also. That the dream should also be thinking about future generations, about what our impact is on the earth…
Hi Evelyn: Lately I’ve been thinking and more and more about my dream garden rather than my dream house. I’ve always loved spending time in gardens–when I was growing up we had a large garden complete with a waterfall and a small pond. I think I’ll take your advice and spend some time this evening visualizing my dream garden.
@Laurie, great one there
The lake is a beautiful idea. I like it that it is natural rather than man-made. I think I can “see” your dream house too!
@Jake, wonderful idea about the organically grown vegetable garden. I was thinking of having a vegetable plot myself but was not sure how to have an organic one. Then again, why am I worrying on the “how”? I like your setting! Can I come for a visit someday?
@J.D. Meier, I thought of that too. I certainly don’t want too big a house either. It will be meaningless to have empty rooms.
@Jason, I like the thought of having an infinity pool on a house perched on a cliff next to the sea. The pool looks like it is suspended. With a glass bottom, you can even see the ocean below. By the way, my description is just a thought. In reality, I prefer a house that is more grounded.
@Carla, I’m all for environmentally friendly houses. I like natural lighting. I also happen to live in a humid country. The location for me is important as I need a house that has lots of breeze flowing through, that will prevent the need for airconditioning.
@Sara, it’s great that the exercise is making you think what you really want. How about having an electic mix of old and new, to get a unique look? I definitely like the idea of having lots of glass all round. This means that the setting is important. So I am either facing greenery or the beach!
Hello Victor,
I am not advocating seeking “pleasure” through external things. If you look through the comments, most of us are hoping for dream houses in serene surroundings. Of course, peace comes from within and in the practice of meditation.
With regards to my dream home, I am thinking about the type of house, setting and location that will generate good energy or “qi”. I want a home that exudes calm, peace, serenity, love, kindness and warmth. As such, it will be great to have the elements that will make meditation conducive. Being able to relax in this place is key! Having family and friends around is also important for me.
For all these that I hope to have, staying in an overcrowded place with toxic elements is not going to help. It will be nice to be able to stay next to a lake or a mountain or the sea. As it is already, I am staying next to the biggest park in Singapore.
Connecting to the feelings of serenity and calmness as I “visualize” this house is of utmost importance. We are living in the third dimensional plane. We do have certain needs and comforts that will help us in our spiritual development.
Even the ajahns need a place to stay. They are building monasteries for people to have peaceful retreats. Now where are they having these buildings at or what features & fittings are they having? I wonder.
Namaste
Evelyn
Lisa,
I am so glad to read a response from you. I am not offended…LOL!! I don’t connect with the lengthy visualization myself. I used it because I thought it was a common one and would draw readers to question if that was really what they wanted. And even if they did, I was not about to practice any judgement. (Just observing and not judging is something that I am focusing on nowadays.)
It is clear that bloggers who comment to my posts are sophisticated beings. When I say “sophisticated”, I mean spiritually more evolved than a lot others. I am delighted to know that it is not the “big” houses that they are after. Many of us have every thought for the environment, going organic and being next to nature.
I like your idea of “double-paned windows to see the cliffs and mountains, skylights”. I would enjoy seeing it myself in your home some day! (Hint hint…invitation please!)
You can read more about my thoughts on what I would like in my response to Victor above.

@Keith, the visualization is just an example of how you can do it. Yes, visualizations are powerful. You may just get what you wish for. So do put enough thought into what you are intending for.
@Lance, I have been going on the basis of what my needs are and working out how big a place is it going to be. Yes, most definitely, an environmentally friendly house will be great!
@Marelisa, so it is not the house but the garden that you need to visualize on? Great! I’d like to see your garden some day!
Thanks Evelyn. You made me realize I need to get going on this specific visualization. My dream house is going on the market and the owners called me specifically because three years ago I left them a note saying “if you ever sell, call me” So the moment is here and I realize I need to kick it into gear visualizing that that is our new home.
Thanks for the motivation. I’ll let you know how it works out…
I so love where you are going with everything.
Hello Katie,
You mean that you’ve already got a “dream house” on the market and ready to change hands now??? Wow….way to go!!
I’m glad that you are able to “catch” the spirit of this post. It is more about kicking all of us into gear about thinking of what we would like in a dream house (if we aren’t in one already). I’m certainly working towards mine.
Oh yes…I am excited for you!! Where is it? How does it look like? Do share if it works out.
Abundance always,
Evelyn
Great topic for conversation at it is so much a personal preference. We have had a life dream board for a few years. For the home section, we add various elements of the home to the board (landscape, amennities etc) but for the most part have left the exterior image of the house out. All our elements reflect a feeling of peace and calm or of environmental integrity. That being said, we don’t limit the grandeur either! There are so many ways to give oneself to the world, I don’t buy into the guilt “for having nice things” concept anymore.
Our main issue with visualizing our dream home is that we are travelers and in love various parts of the world!! We are not tied to a physical location for work and so we are finding that we have a hard time settling on where this home will be.
I see.. Thanks Evelyn for the comments!
Wow, that was fun!
My house is awesome, you should all visit sometime.
There’s a genuine creek that runs through the living room, and I have a dog that can mix drinks and make coffee.
Evelyn,
You have no idea how many times I’ve done this exercise, yet each time is fresh and exciting! I enjoyed your pictures very much, especially the house with the bow over it… drives home the point that we do receive gifts from the universe if we are open.
My dream house has a view of the ocean and I would go to sleep and wake up to the sound of the waves. I don’t care if it’s a beach shack or a mansion, as long as I can sit outdoors and watch the sunrise or sunset over the water. Hmm… I feel relaxed and happy just thinking about being there (and in some parallel universe I probably AM there right now…)
Monica,
You made me smile with your comment about not limiting on the grandeur either. Rightly said about not experiencing guilt! I like that all your elements are reflections of peace, calm and environmental integrity. I am sure that your dream house is a beautiful one with all the right energies in place.
I also resonate well with the idea that we are “travelers”, love to see the world and not have work that ties us down to a physical location. We are pretty aligned in our thinking
May your dream house come true!
Abundance always,
Evelyn
@Victor, you are welcome!
@David, your comment made me laugh!! The humorous part in your response applies to the dog of course and not the creek! I’ll love to visit your home some day! It’ll be fun!
@Daphne, I like the same picture of the gift house too. I felt uplifted every time I saw it while editing this post.
I enjoy sleeping to the sound of waves. Your comment made me remember of how much time I used to spend on the beach or at sea before I had my first kid. Much of my free time was spent doing some form of water sports; be it waterskiing, wakeboarding, sailing or diving.
As it is, I need to go and visit you in your dream home too. My dream house now sits atop a hill, overlooking pastures of greenery. Quiet and tucked away; yet near enough to my kids’ school and amenities.
I agree with J.D.! Too big doesn’t feel like home. My dream house is airy, filled with light and clutter-free. That’s pretty much it.
This is a fantastic visualisation! I really enjoyed this ‘template’.
It offers so much detail toward imagining what your home and living space can be like.
As you say, feeling what’s appropriate for the individual is important as is flexibility between desiring and needing.
My home is surrounded by nature and reflects this indoors too.
It’s bright, open, airy and inviting, near the sea. With a boys toys room and a meditation space. A perfect place to share and party!
Thanks
Jens
Hi Evelyn, my dream house doesn’t have to be big. I prefer lots of plants and able to hear sounds of nature.
Thanks for the exercise, Evelyn.
Hi Evelyn,
Years ago, I cut out a picture of the kind of place I wanted to live in and within a year, I was living in a place that was 98% exactly like it. (Actually, I will have a post on that time of my life later this week.) Anyway…once I had that experience, I became convinced at the power of having a dream book.
My idea of the perfect home has changed. For me, I like a lot of light in a house…so my new dream home would have lots of light coming in via windows, white walls, as environmentally friendly as possible and be near the beach..I would prefer somewhere in Hawaii.
As for the dream book, it does work and I am so happy you suggested people cutting out pictures or even doing a floor plan. Those little details really make a difference.
Great post, Evelyn!
Evelyn, thanks for your response, I do see the value in this exercise. And I take your point re: not judging. I considered myself Buddhist for many years (I’ve stopped labeling myself anymore), and really worked at meeting things as is, without judgment. It’s interesting though – current world events are making me re-evaluate that when it comes to certain ecological/material things, and I am still working through where I feel the line is. After all, change involves some sort of judgment and directing of our intent. But I also am so wary of becoming self-righteous, because it feeds so much conflict in the world. So looking at my internal response to this post, and all the other commenters reactions and responses, has really been a great exercise for me to continue to sort through this. Thanks for facilitating!
@Vered, I shudder to think about the amount of cleaning that has to take place if I have too big a house. Hmmm…aside….would that be a limiting belief on my part????
@Jens, looks like you already have your dream home!! Now where did you say you come from again?
@Aswino, I heartily nod to the plants and next to nature too!
@Nadia, you’ve just provided a wonderful testimonial to all those who are skeptics about doing an art and craft or creative project for manifestation. I believe that it works! More and more of my intentions are manifesting. I’m still working on my dream home though as my needs have changed in recent years and I am intending it to be near my kids’ school.
Lisa,
I’ve never labeled myself to be a Buddhist even though I am inclined to its teachings. However, I can get all self righteous as welll in matters that you’ve described. (You are not alone…LOL!!)
More recently, I became aware about not passing judgement and just observing. It’s not easy of course but I realize I can “see” much more if I keep an open mind. The wonderful thing is that my heart also opens to accepting and forgiving of self and others. It is a beautiful experience.
Thanks for recognizing that I am merely facilitating. Have you heard of the saying that “the finger that points to the moon is not the moon”? Well, my site is in a way doing just that. I or my site is just the finger that points to the moon and not the moon. There is every encouragement to readers of this blog to check out what I say but not to take what I say as the truth right away. Then again, there may not be such a thing as “truth”…..but that is another story…for another post.
Your openness is much appreciated. I’m so glad to have found another person on the same path of practice. Much love to you!
Namaste
Evelyn
Bill Gates did well about this
I remember reading this from the interesting book of Christine Comarford Lynch ( his lover also)
My dream house is modern and open plan, full of windows and light, decorated with art and collectibles from my travels and overlooks the ocean. It is also a short walk to the beach and not too big. I like cosy, though I need enough room to have 4 bedrooms, a sun-filled writing space from which I can shut out the world, and a small recording studio for MusicMan. It also has privacy in the garden with trees separating me from the neighbours. That’s it really.
My dad is an architectural draftsman so when I was a kid I would sit beside him, watch him design and draw the house plans of my own dream home. It was much fancier then and I had a thing about fountains in gardens – not sure why. I still love the houses my dad designs and I look forward to him drawing up my dream home one day – with my input of course! I look forward to doing this visualization tonight and anticipating what will eventuate in the right time. It will be a great way to fall asleep.
Kelly@SHE-POWER
My dream house is big enough to house family and friends in the summer, but small enough to give you that warm and cozy feeling. It is old, farm-like but with all the latest modern touches, like a steam bath, a fantastic kitchen to cook home-made meals for my family and friends, and a little lounge style home theater would be great so we can entertain friends during our long boring winters here on the island. A sauna would be great too. It’s private, it has a spacious garden for the kids to run in and the house is light and bright. Truly a sacred place and a reflection of my taste.
I have been collecting pictures on vision boards for a long time now, I am just waiting for all the pieces to come together. I think with most of these IMMENSE mansions and dream houses, we subconsciously believe it will NEVER happen and therefore it won’t.
I dream much smaller and even that has yet to happen.
Thanks for the inspiration, I really need to turn the ‘mood setting’ up a notch and do my wealth affirmations more often (or: actually DO them!)
Ugh! NONE of those houses appeal to me.
I would sooner take one of those Monster Mansions, sell it, take the money, and buy a small 2-bedroom chalet, right on a ski hill somewhere in British Columbia.
@Linh, really? Wow…that is interesting!
@Kelly, it is no surprise to me that you would like one near the beach!! Your description sounds perfect, with enough privacy, light and space.
It also sounds fun to be able to watch your dad draw out the design of houses. I’d have love to be in the same creative space too. I sure hope that you’ll get your dream house some day and your dad to be the one being involved too! Good luck and sweet dreams!
@jessica, your farm-like house sounds authentic and homely. At the same time, it is balanced with every bit of modern practicality and comfort. I’d like to encourage you to continue working on your visualizations. Henry Ford said “Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.†Now which way will you have it?
Great very interesting! Awesome blog!
Hi Evelyn. As you know, my dream home is a simple, lovely log cabin with a garden. The only photos that appeal to me here are those 30,000 square feet of land
I’m attracted to the cozy, and simple, with a sprinkle of luxury. I would feel lost in a huge mansion. The photo on my Vision of Fulfillment post sums up my dream home. Sigh.
Not only do I have a picture of my dream house on my Vision Board, but I’m going to view it in a couple of weeks so I can properly visualise myself living in it – it is for sale!
My only issue is I can’t afford it. But I’m not letting that stop me – there’s gotta be a way and I’m open to discovering what it might be
@Bradpete, thank you for your feedback
@Davina, I too believe that I don’t really desire a large mansion. But then large is really relative. I do wish for a big garden though, as I think it will be lovely for my kids.
@Hilda, oh wow….it’s great that at least you are aware that such a house exist. Who knows?…You may just get it sooner than you think!
Hi Evelyn,
I used to long for a big mansion similar to the first house you pictured, but over the years I’ve realized I want a loving relationship with my soul mate more than another home. I love to entertain and definitely enjoy beautiful surroundings, but along with more space to enjoy my friends, family and create a loving relationship with my soul mate I would also visualize maid and maintenance service as well as a chauffeur so we are free to live our life purpose.
Oddly enough, I don’t have a dream home. I did as a kid, but now I don’t have any specifics I’d like in a house. I’d just love to gain the peace of mind that wherever I choose to live, I’ve made the right choice for me. (I am grappling with the strong instinct to move closer to my family now–partly because I am very happy in Cali, albeit disappointed that I’m not near them).
I suspect this is why I’m not great at visualization. Most of what I want is abstract. (Peace of mind, decisiveness, etc).
Great and visionary post Evelyn!
I don’t particularly have a specific dream house (I love my current room quite a lot), but I do have a dream vision of how my school will look like
(think Xavier style in X-men!)
Nice post. Like the secret. I have seen the dvd.
But hard to believe.
Have you seen anybody bought a house by just visualization
@Flora, definitely no material means can replace the wish of being in a loving relationship. Wise decision in visualizing the maid and maintenance services if the home you desire is big. Getting appropriate help is necessary!
@Lori, I’d use the peace of mind to go a little more specific in the surroundings that I would like to be in. The challenge is giving the Universe/God the right balance of details. Having some trust that all these work can help.
@Celes, what school are you hoping to set up? Sounds exciting!
@hkki, if you read through the comments, there are some who are already pretty near to buying the house in their vision board. Nothing is going to work if you have no belief in it. It’s common sense.
I live in Gunma-ken japan, my visualization is to buy a beautiful home, drive nice car and run my own business in the U.S. for next year and I very happy about my visualization thank you helping me with some hints!
I had to respond to this, I just could not leave without posting because to me “home” is such an important idea.
I started many years ago visualizing my ideal house. As I looked around adding to my wish list for my future perfect home (yes I had a book and I added magazine clippings, photos, and whole articles on things that seemed relevent, concerning “my house” to it, I discovered so much about myself. Light is important to me, calm and tranquil matter. A tiny kitchen is ok with me, goumet is not necessary because my meals are plain and simple and I like it that way. I must have a garden. But what surprised me most was how much of my dream house became about choices. Even in a perfect world, life is a lot about conflicting ideals. Beach or mountain, big or small. Sometimes you can cleverly combine ideas and have it all, but often a ten of one thing is a zero of another. Visualizing the house as real gave me a deep insight about who I truly am. The choices I made mentally, often over and over again, reinforced what I saw as immutable about the house. I sometimes surprised myself, as over time I changed my mind about which things I was certain I firmly “had to have” or “could do without”.
Now, years later, I live here. In a small, but very pretty little house on an island. It sits just as I imagined it, wild and beautiful, perched on a cliff above the water and framed by tall fir trees. The windows (yes there is one over the sink) look out from the bluff I am on, over the bay. The sea is always changing, I never tire of the view. I have a small garden of organic vegetables, a few fruit trees, a handful of chickens. It is a quiet house and the light is good. I air the house every morning, I love the way the sea breeze freshens everything. There are eagles here overhead most mornings.
I cannot lie, there are things I give up to be here. My house is not everyones dream. But it is mine and I love it, this house of mine, the one that has gone from being imagined to being solid and real.
Vizualization is a wonderful, wonderful, thing.
@kassia, may all your dreams and wishes come true
@Meris, I am so glad to know that you already are staying in a dream house. Thanks for sharing how visualizations have worked for you. The descriptions of where you are now sounds awesome!! I wouldn’t mind a visit some day
Now there are many online websites offers wide range of Display Homes, Home Builders, Land for Sale, House Land Package, House Plans and New Home Designs, house and land package and many more.
…very interesting- I am working on my “dream list” and understanding the law of attraction.- and I put a search on Google for ” dream house” and this post came up? Coincidence? nothing is impossible- as long as we restore our memory of who we are!
