I dreamed I was a butterfly. No longer flitting around, I flew with a clear idea of where I was going. It was to a place as if time had stood still, waiting for me to arrive. As soon as I entered, the place picked up the beautiful colors of my wings. No longer dull, it lit up.
It was a classroom setting. There were rows of individual desks. Each desk was occupied. No, I don’t recognize anyone. Then again, the occupants hardly looked ordinary to me. Although they had human faces, I perceived that they were not. I could not quite make out if they each had a unique appearance but they certainly looked illuminating. They also seemed to be wearing a uniform of some sort. However, because they were all seated, I did not have a clear picture of what the uniform really looked like.
All was quiet in the classroom. There was a blackboard right in front but no teacher around. Yet every BEing was looking straight to the front. With a serious look that they wore over their calm and serene faces, they appeared to be absorbing lessons.
My wings fluttering, I lingered for a bit. Soon, it was time to go. As I flew back to present reality, I seemed to lose the sense of being a butterfly. I was back again in my bed and waking up to the morning dawn. In my mind, the corners of my lips were curving up in a smile. I was smiling at the thought that came through: “I had just traveled to somewhere familiar. A place I have been countless times. A separate dimension. A parallel universe.”
Saturday Night: How I Came To Dream
![]() |
The above description was a dream that I woke up to on Sunday morning. Prior to going to bed the night before, I had opened a message in my inbox, containing a link to the picture on the left. (Please note that for the purposes of publishing this post, I have been hoping to credit this image to its creator but could not find out who this person is). I became so enchanted by the changing colors of its wings that I searched for a quote that would go along with the image. I read so many lines – they were all so beautiful and inspiring – but the one that spoke to me most was this saying……
“I dreamed I was a butterfly, flitting around in the sky; then I awoke. Now I wonder: Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man?”
— Chuang Tzu quotes (China’s early interpreters of Taoism, 389-286 BC)
The quote reminded me of one of my favorite sayings, which I have also shared in a recent post Soul Revelations From Past Life Memories. Here is the saying once again….
“You are not a human being in search of a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being immersed in a human experience.”
— Teilhard de Chardin quotes (French Geologist, Priest, Philosopher and Mystic, 1881-1955)
After I switched off my PC late Saturday night, I decided to do a quiet sitting. However, exhausted after a long day, I could barely keep my eyes open and soon fell asleep while meditating.
Sunday And Thereafter: In Search Of Parallel Universes
Was it really a dream? I was intrigued that the term “parallel universe” came to me while I was sleeping. So after some intensive crawling on the web, I came upon some interesting finds.
1. Fact or Fiction?
In case you think I have gone bonkers about searching for something that is a myth more than anything, here is a set of 5 interesting videos from a BBC documentary that I found, revealing that parallel universes may just be backed by Science.
Youtube Video: Parallel Universes – Part 1
Here are the links to the other 4 parts:
Parallel Universes – Part 3: Interestingly, this video shared that new discoveries in physics or science seldom come from a logical sequence of thinking. It is more like poetry, taking an imaginative leap!
In summary, the description to all 5 videos says “Scientists now believe there may really be a parallel universe – in fact, there may be an infinite number of parallel universes, and we just happen to live in one of them. These other universes contain space, time and strange forms of exotic matter. Some of them may even contain you, in a slightly different form. Astonishingly, scientists believe that these parallel universes exist less than one millimetre away from us. In fact, our gravity is just a weak signal leaking out of another universe into ours.”
2. Article Readings on Parallel Universes
Here are some article readings:
Do Parallel Universe really exist?
The Void: Imprint of Another Universe
Scientific American: Parallel Universes
3. Any Other Blogger Posting on Parallel Universes?
Then I started to ask myself which blogger might have written about parallel universes. Aha! Erin Pavlina!! She might have something. I went to her site and typed in “parallel universe” on the search box. The first result came out in this link Welcome to Naptown.
I did a click over. The post was written on August 9, 2006. Lo and behold, Erin had written in the first sentence…
“Last night I dreamed I was a butterfly, and now I do not know if I am a man who dreamed he was a butterfly, or a butterfly now dreaming I am a man.” – Lao Tzu
In her post, she shared about a world that she had visited over and over again, while taking her naps. Hmmmm…interesting!
Your Thoughts Or Stories Please
1. I dreamed I was a butterfly. If you are a creative writer, would you like to explore where this sentence will take you? Write a short verse and either, share it in the comments below or do a trackback to this post. In the verse, your opening sentence should read “I dreamed I was a butterfly”.
2. Due to a sequence of triggers, the term “parallel universe” came to me while I was dreaming. What do you think? Do you believe that it exists? Or what about a multiverse, the co-existence of a number of parallel universes?
3. Have you traveled somewhere else, possibly to another dimension or universe, while in your dreams? Do share your personal stories below, if you have them.

Somewhere in the New Age literature I’ve read that one of the things we do when we’re sleeping is travel to a place in the afterlife where classes are given (the “Temple of Wisdom” or something). I’ve had many dreams that I’ve been in a class studying something that was really tough to learn, and woken up tired from all the seeming effort, but I’ve never dreamed I was a butterfly.

I have to return to this and go through it again… slowly… later. I LOVE parallel universes and, no joke, my novel deals with parallel universes and butterflies that flit between them. Cool beans.

Love the post, Evelyn – I am always thrilled to read of others’ symbolic dreams, and I’m keen to hear more about your feelings on waking – what does this dream mean to you? what does it symbolise or signify?
Butterflies are big with my two daughters – only this weekend we decorated their room with a pack of glittery, colourful ones which we fixed to the walls. And the butterfly – and its representation of transformation and transition from the mundane (caterpillar) to the beautiful – is the symbol for Beyond Blue, the national depression initiative in Australia. I am interested to hear more from you and your readers about this powerful, symbolic dream!

@Dot, oh my goodness…you’ve shared something that is so interesting!! It’s new to me about attending classes in another dimension. It’s the first time I have dreamed about being a butterfly. Then again, I might have previously. I could have been totally unaware. With an increased level of awareness, I have been remembering my dreams lately. Thanks for sharing!!
@WriterDad, please do come back to this post. I’d be interested to read what you’ve got to share in your writings.
I do realize that my post today introduces more than one thought idea. However, I can’t resist putting them all in!

I have spent a great deal of my reading time on Physics books geared at the layperson. I find that the more that I learn about physics, particularly the field of Quantum Physics, the more I see the intersection of science and spirituality. Therefore the idea of the multi-verse, parallel universes, seems very real and credible to me. The idea that at each decision point the probabilities exist that either or any decision can be made and that universes branch off from those probabilities. For instance, as I sat down and read this post there was an equal probability that I would write a comment or not. So there now exist two universes: one where I wrote this comment and one where I did not.
I like to play with this idea sometimes and imagine some decision points in my life and theorize on what direction my life went in another universe where I made a different decision. What would the universe look like where I chose not to have a child? How about a universe where I chose a writing career out of college instead of teaching?
These can be fun exercises and they can also be instructive. What would today be like if I didn’t read this post at all? Hmmmm…a little bit emptier I think

I came to give the Lao Tzu quote (which I thought was Chungse instead) – but you already had it. Great post, Evelyn!
I was in a metaphysics seminar a couple of years ago and we talked about possible worlds, especially in relation to how those worlds provide truth statements for this one. It can get pretty crazy.
[Reply]
Melissa, you had me laughing when you said “For instance, as I sat down and read this post there was an equal probability that I would write a comment or not. So there now exist two universes: one where I wrote this comment and one where I did not.”
It is a great suggestion to do fun exercises for considering alternate possibilities!! I may just do them myself and while at it, teach my daughters to expand their imagination.
Thanks for enjoying and liking my post

Hi Matt, thanks for liking this post! Lucid dreams are fascinating, aren’t they?
I have been having several lucid dreams, as far as I can remember. However, I have never thought of finding out their interpretations until lately. it? I’d be keen on sharing more about them and to learn from other readers as well!!

My first reaction was “no way!” but then I thought – why wouldn’t there be a parallel universe? It would be very self-centered of us to assume that it’s just us, that there’s nothing else. Kind of like other forms of life on other planets. Of course it’s possible. We just can’t prove it yet.
[Reply]
Vered, I was expecting you to say “no way”…lol!! If you’ve got the time, I’d suggest that you watch the videos. I didn’t realize that science had already gone that far in exploring the possibility of “parallel universes”.
Just imagine…you may have a twin somewhere else….lol!!

You have given a wealth of sources to consider. I’ll have to save the videos and readings for later this evening, but I did want to comment.
Every time I hear people question whether there is intelligent life on other planets, I always wonder why they aren’t asking similar questions about our planet. Anyone who thinks we’re the only species in the universe or that there aren’t parallel and other universes is indeed restricted. We’re still struggling with some of the most mundane problems, like how to respect other beliefs and lifestyles without killing each other.
I heard the other day that if all the insects disappeared from the earth, it would soon deteriorate. But if all the humans disappeared from the earth, it would flourish. Think about that for a moment.

Evelyn – this is fascinating stuff. And I’m really looking forward to watching these videos.
I have always felt that time may not exist. But the thought that we can also exist in a different time at the same time, even in a different form sounds interesting and exciting. Thanks for sharing your experience and these resources.

Dear Evelyn
I like the dream you had but sometimes this is a reflection of what you have done in the course of the day which is the reason your mind pinpointed on the butterfly. That is good. Sometimes people say it is a way your mind unwind to review what you did that particular day. Others would say “oh, this is from what you were eating, or drinking, or watching on the television or listening to on the radio.” Even though you did mention you were impressed with the butterfly you was dealing with that particular day. You also mentioned you received a inbox message which displayed a beautiful butterfly which displayed beautiful colors. You also wanted to credit the person but you could not find the person. So by that being said your subconscious mind lingered on the butterfly and took you to a place which would make your well being more at peace. That is the reason you smiled because you were drifting to a familiar place which you frequently visit. Now that can be any place, but let me remind you where ever the place is, the place is a positive reflection of where you go all the time.
Sincerely
Miss. Bridget
In the year of 2003 in December, I dreamed I traveled to Australia now let me remind you I had never left California in my life. But there I was I was riding on a row boat with a friend I never seen before. Suddenly I was looking at the city of Australia and the water. The scene was quite calming. The festivities were like something out of a movie called a “Christmas Carol” Old Father Christmas was laughing and drinking out of a goblet. Christmas ornaments were stringed on the wall and Christmas trees were beautifully decorated with miniture Christmas presents then the dream stopped. It was a pleasant dream to escape from the rat race of everyday living.
I suppose we as humans need a vacation and sometimes we need to take one immediately. So the mind takes us to far away places via transformed by a butterfly or what ever we can perceive ourselves as being at the moment.
Now question about the parallel world, I would say we too have a parallel world the place is called heaven. Whether life exist on it is to be determine once we leave the mortal body and enter the eternal realm of life.
The place heaven is filled with mansions not made by man’s hands. People live there and they do not have the cares of this world to deal with. I do not want to appear religious on you, but there is such a place called the after life once a person leave this world and transform from the mortal body to the spiritual body.
I am sorry I do not have more to say but you can read the International Bible and read St. John then continue till you finish reading Revelations.
[Reply]
Evelyn, I have to agree with Vered – that my first thought on the idea of parallel universes was that it can’t be possible. Then, I also thought more about it. We live in an awesome world, and I have a difficult time fathoming how it is all held together. Which makes me believe that there is just so much I don’t know, so much that I can’t even comprehend. And why not parallel universes? This world, this galaxy that we live in is pretty amazing itself – who knows what’s beyond that. Really, you’re helping me to see the possibilities that may exist in our world. That there is more to it than meets the eye. And that is all very fascinating.
And…I think the colorful butterfly is pretty cool too!
[Reply]
Evelyn, your post is wonderful, and the images you share with us are breathtakingly beautiful.
Your dream reminds me of descriptions given in the books Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls by Michael Newton. I wouldn’t be surprised if your dream was a soul memory from between lives.
In my late teens and early twenties, I read extensively on theoretical physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, and felt forever fascinated by the wonders of the universe.
From an omnipresent perspective, I would characterize parallel universes as parallel worlds co-existing in a single universe with multiple dimensions (more than 4).
In my dreams, I fly through strange worlds. In one particularly vivid and lucid dream, I flew high above a range of mountains made of blue and white crystal.
The image of the butterfly with circulating colors inspired me to write this:
I dreamed I was a butterfly … a breeze carried me through an open window and I flitted around some before I saw her, engrossed by the screen of her laptop, humming softly to herself, tapping the keys as light and swift as grace itself, smiling when she saw me, her smile drew me near to her ear and then her cheek, where I brushed it with my wing, and she giggled, her eyes sparkling knowingly, for she knew who I was, and was not afraid to hold out her finger, where I alighted and showed off my vibrant colors, whereupon she gasped and then laughed her delight, for in the darkness of night by the glow of her laptop, my dynamic display of color cycled quickly through the visible spectrum as a gift to her bright and lovely manner, which for me spoke to her infinite love of peace for one and all.
I look forward to watching the videos you shared. Thank you for such a richly textured and provocative post.
In wonder of all that is,
Christopher

I like the description of your dream, and parallel universe is quite fascinating subject to learn about. I don’t think we are alone either! Like Lance said “there is more to it than meets the eye!

Hi Evelyn. I totally believe this is possible! Could be we’re not evolved enough as a race to be privy to proof of this. Sure enough some souls with alterior motives would find a way to use this to their advantage.
I hope to find time to watch the videos you have shared. I suspect that coincidences, synchronicities and deja vu all have something to do with this subject.

@Flora, most definitely what you’ve shared goes back to whether “I am the butterfly or the man”. It is very possible that there is more than one universe. It’s interesting about what you’ve shared about the earth flourishing even if humans disappeared!
@Cath, an expanded awareness can help us put things in perspective. Do bookmark this post and view the videos later!! They are very good!
@Miss Bridget, I know of a Chinese saying that basically has the meaning that whatever we think of in the day, we dream about it in the night. My dream can be indicative of a parallel universe and then it may also not be. I wouldn’t and haven’t concluded that I have definitely been to a different dimension. It is hard to prove anything….unless I’ve brought back something physical from over there….LOL!!
Thanks also for sharing about a parallel world called heaven. I don’t choose to reject any possibility.
On my site too, I have also been inviting readers to consider exploring areas they have not thought before. The decision to make on what to believe or not to believe is an individual one, and not something for me to impose.
[Reply]
Lance, I am guessing somehow that my posts (not just this one) must have been challenging you in a lot of ways…LOL!!
Read what I wrote about Video 3. You would think that scientist themselves go through a logical sequence of thinking. But they have been taking imaginative leaps and working their way backwards.
With each post, what I am doing is that I am introducing and sharing with you an unconventional thought, a possibility. It is up to you to examine it, and make your own conclusions. The process is helpful if your aim is to live consciously, in deep awareness.

@Lori, oh…your few lines just enchanted me far more than the changing colors of the butterfly picture on this post!!
@Davina, you said “I suspect that coincidences, synchronicities and deja vu all have something to do with this subject”….I am guessing the same too!
@Vish, I am learning how to develop more awareness. Perhaps, a heightened level of observation accounts for being able to connect the dots to complete a coherent picture. I am very sure that the same connectedness is available in all of us. Namaste!

Hi Evelyn – you have reminded me of when I was very little, probably I was about 4 years old. I knew the sleeping beauty story, where she sleeps for 100 years.
I used to wonder whether “real” life was my awake self, or like the sleeping beauty I was really asleep and I had some other awake life (to try to put my 4 year old thoughts into a coherent sentence in a comments section ha ha)
I think we have an intuitive understanding that the reality we perceive is not the only reality – I love the way the Starseed Transmissions goes into this topic.

What a beautiful dream, story and pictures. You know I have seen that picture of the butterfly with the colors changing before a few years ago (colors were static though)but I cannot help you with the credit either.

Hi Evelyn,
My own personal take on this is yes, I believe parallel universes do exist, and I think there’s been more than enough scientific studies and revelations to prove this. What makes most people resistant to the buy-in of this theory is probably the perceived lack of physical evidence on how the other parallel universes look, sound or feel like. It’s interesting to note how often the word “uncomfortable” has been used in the video. Just because human science is uncomfortable with its lack in ability to prove everything does not mean that some things do not exist.
I think Christopher has put it in a nice, simple way:
[Reply]
“From an omnipresent perspective, I would characterize parallel universes as parallel worlds co-existing in a single universe with multiple dimensions …”
[Reply]
@Robin, you may be right. For all you know, as you’ve said, you are sleeping but having an “awake” life (your present reality). You also said “I think we have an intuitive understanding that the reality we perceive is not the only reality”. I am having the same gut feel too!
@Evita, thanks for liking this post, its pictures and my dream. I’m glad that you find the idea about parallel universes intriguing!
@Vincent, have you watched the videos? The videos reveal that an alternate Universe may just be less than a millimeter away!
[Reply]
Irene, thanks for sharing your personal views on this. I am totally in agreement with what you said that just because something is not proven, does not mean that it does not exist.
I am inclining to reach the same conclusion myself about a single universe as with you and Christopher. It’ll also be great that sceptics out there can open their minds to explore possibilities. The most important thing is that each of us dare go beyond the limitations of our mind to discover new realities (if any), before making a hasty decision that the inhabitants that we can physically see are the only BEings in the entire space.
Love, light and truth,
Evelyn

I fully agree, Evelyn.
Nothing we every experience or our reason for response to any experience is every fully contained within this four-dimensional continuum. We are in a flow of eternal experience of infinite varation, and our senses within this continuum filters ‘inconsistencies.’
Sometimes intentional or unintentional experiences can alter/augment the filtration system, providing the “mystic’s” perception of reality.
Coincidentally, my last post was “Parallels.”

Have you explored Shamanism or Shamanic journeys? A friend of mine became one of the best archers on his team when he saw through the eyes of a hawk during his journey.
[Reply]
Hi Evelyn: This post reminded me of the story “La Vida es Sueño” in which a man who had been imprisoned his whole life was told that he was really a prince and was taken to the castle. While at the castle someone explained to him that a prophecy had been made upon his birth that he would kill his father, the king. Therefore, the king had him imprisoned at birth. In his old age the king repented for having imprisoned his son based on a silly prophecy, and so he had him taken out of prison. Following a series of events the man indeed killed the king. He was knocked unconscious and when he awoke he was back in the prison. He told the warden what had happened and the warden told him it had just been a dream.
And I do believe in parallel universes, in fact, I believe we make different choices in each one so there is a different version of us in each of these parallel universes.
[Reply]
This was a really captivating post Evelyn.
I do believe in parallel universes and apparently visited a parallel universe while in a regression. The thing that really stood out about this place was the absence of time and the profound lessons it brought. Since then, I am more open to receiving messages from the guides in this “time” in space. It’s quite an awe inspiring topic for me, thanks

What a thought provoking post, Evelyn. I’m not sure what I believe in this regard as I haven’t really considered the whole concept of parallel universes too seriously before. I wouldn’t say “No they don’t exist”, but I feel like I don’t have enough information to have any reality on the subject, if you know what I mean.
I have experienced astral travel before though on numerous occasions, particularly when I was a child. Is this the same thing?
Love the photo of the butterfly though. It would have inspired me too if I’d received it in an email.

Hi Kelly, I definitely know what you mean about not having info to work on. I don’t have enough info myself. That was why I found it strange that the term “parallel universe” came to me, out of the blue. Was I watching any sci-fi movie this period? No way!! Neither was I reading any book related to this subject.
All I knew was that it took one picture, surfing the web for an inspirational quote and falling asleep while meditating to trigger the dream for me.
I have heard about astral projection. I’m not sure if they are the same thing. Like you, I “appear” to be new to this type of info or experiences. But strangely, I have been getting messages these two days that these should not be new to me. It is an instinctive sense that I have traveled to far more places beyond Earth and this physical realm.
Well, I’m going to explore further on this topic. I’m for experiential learning. I’m going to practice more consciousness of where my dreams are going to take me. Stay tuned!!
Love & light,
Evelyn
