I thought I would like to share the mind-body-spirit measures that my family and I are taking in preventing flu caused by the H1N1 virus with you today. Over the four weeks in June, not a day would pass without a front page article in our local papers about the swine flu.

While the virus is not as lethal as once feared, the number of confirmed cases continued to climb. Concerns heightened even more as kids were due to return to school this week.
I have been compelled to make a few changes in my kids’ schedule, that in turn caused a disruption in my publishing routine to this blog. In coming up with a preferred approach for preventative flu measures, there were a number of factors that we took into consideration. You may like to consider the same too!
Conventional Western Medicine?
Firstly, my husband and I are not too keen on the idea of taking flu vaccinations. Flu vaccines are cocktails of heavy metals and synthetic chemicals. Consuming excessive drugs reduces the body’s defense system. It lowers your immunity. In the long run, your vulnerability to viral attacks also increases.
I prefer to adopt approaches that are holistic for the purpose of strengthening the immune system, rather than on relying on short term measures. Furthermore, there appears to be no guarantee that taking a flu vaccine can fully prevent a H1V1 viral attack.
Mind: Emotional Stress
If you have been following reports in the news diligently about the swine flu, it is not unexpected that you will become alarmed. News about the H1N1 virus hogged headlines every single day in June, or at least in our papers. As a cosmopolitan and pretty open country, we have visitors and tourists flying in from many parts of the world everyday. The fear was importing the virus from an affected country, which eventually became a reality.
What is perhaps most toxic of all, in my opinion, is creating and thriving in an environment of worry and anxiety. Most physical breakdowns have a root emotional cause. Too much worry and stress can wear down your body’s resistance. You also bring about ill health, when you focus on your fears. How healthy the emotional state of your mind is has an impact on your well-being.
Physical Body: Food
1. To fight flu, Vitamin C is vital. If you suspect that you are not already having an adequate supply of Vitamin C through your food and drinks, consider the option of taking additional supplements. Please check with your doctor on dosage and recommendations, before doing so.
2. Drink lots of water. Add a drop or two of fresh lemon juice into your water.
3. Instead of coffee which is dehydrating, switch to herbal teas.
4. If you are brave enough, consider consuming raw garlic cloves. Garlic contains selenium, a natural immune system booster. Alternatively, add lots of garlic into your cooking. Or consider taking garlic supplements.
Physical Body: Herbal Supplements
I paid a visit to my Naturopathic Doctor for a health update last week. As a specialist in the natural health field, he has always espoused the philosophy of using drug-free options. I ended up purchasing a whole range of products including some organic formulations that were mixed specially on the spot.
So that you can check them out at retail stores, here are two ready-to-buy herbal products and supplements that I bought:
1. The Hildegard’s Flu Powder. This “magic” potion contains the anti-viral, anti-parasite and anti-bacteria herb pellitory. What is wonderful is that we can easily sprinkle the powder over our meals. My picky kids do not realize that there has been anything added to their food.
2. MEDIHERB’S Andrographic complex. The supplement is to be taken if you experience the first or ongoing symptoms of flu, sore throat, infection and fever. The pre-mixed herbs are all anti-viral. MEDIHERB’S Andrographic complex is also great to carry with you prior to an overseas trip.
You may, on your own, check with your local practitioner for some recommendations on anti-viral herbal supplements. While good quality supplements may not be cheap, I consider the money spent as an investment to good health. It beats paying expenses for hospitalization or flu vaccinations, if the untoward happens.
Physical Body: Others
The following tips are already widely known but are nonetheless helpful in the overall prevention strategy to the H1N1 virus:
1. Practice Good Hygiene. Wash hands thoroughly after bathroom use. Refrain from sneezing openly but blow your nose with tissue paper.
2. Avoid Crowded Places. I doubt that it is possible to avoid going out altogether. Life still needs to be carried on!! However, it is best to avoid crowded places especially if we are ill. I have no problems with following this guideline since I pretty much do not like crowds. For as long as I can remember, I am not able to last long in shopping centers as I can feel energetically drained.
3. Regular Exercise. Stay healthy through regular exercises. Although my recent vacation was meant to be a relaxing one, I was not merely spending time lounging by the swimming pool. I did aerobics, yoga, table tennis and kayaking during my Club Med holiday last week.
4. Improve Respiratory Health. To combat flu, you may also like to use exercises that improve respiratory health. I am currently looking into the practice of Qigong, an ancient Chinese art form that involves directing the flow of “Qi” or life force energy through breathing techniques and slow graceful movements. The benefits are improved circulation, balanced health and a closer connection to Universe/Source.
Mind-Body-Spirit: Aromatherapy
Burning essential oils for air purification or adding them into your baths are excellent ideas that you can adopt. Oregano, cinnamon and lemon are great for boosting the immune system. They are antiseptic, antiviral and antifungal. Eucalyptus is known to be good for the respiratory system.
Using essential oils can also be great for calming your soul. Light some white candles and play some relaxing music to go along.
Spirit: Shields of Protection
My friend, Nat, reminded me the importance of shielding ourselves with spheres of protection before going out for the day. Nat is an NLP coach and a clinical hypnotherapist who always has a wealth of ideas to share whenever I call him. He suggested using protective shields against swine flu. I thought that it was a good suggestion to teach my kids too!!
There are many ways of visualizing protective shields. A shield in the form of an egg-with-reflecting-mirrors is one that Nat recommended. It will be fun and easy for kids to apply as well. In case you are interested, here are the steps:
1. Take three deep breaths.
2. Visualize that you are in a shield which looks like an egg or a sphere. Your shield is completely sealed.
3. Visualize that the egg or sphere has protective mirrors all round. The mirrors are one-way. You can see the outside from where you are but energies on the outside cannot penetrate in. In fact, with the mirrors, all negative energies are reflected outwards. Hence, all viruses will not be absorbed.
4. Call up this shield at any time by having the focused intent of “I am placing a shield of protection around me”.
Summary and Conclusion
Prevention is the best defense. The preferred approach I am taking is a mind-body-spirit one, that includes using energy work and totally drug-free. In summary, my tips include:
- Reduce Emotional Stress;
- Boost with Flu-prevention foods;
- Take Anti-viral Herbal Supplements;
- Exercise to Improve Respiratory Health;
- Practice Good Hygiene;
- Avoid Crowded Places;
- Use Aromatherapy; and
- Protect With Energetic Shields.
Of course, always stay home to rest if you are coming down with a flu, fever or infection.
Should we be called to action only when there is a threat of an outbreak? Well, taking care of our health is something that we ought to be doing on a daily basis. If anything, the spread in swine flu is a firm reminder to us about not neglecting our bodies. All small measures count towards overall health!

Hi Evelyn: There was a bit of a scare here in Panama about swine flu about a month and a half ago and those little masks that people wear were selling out fast. But then nothing actually happened and everyone returned to normal.
I also practice creating a protective shield around myself (sometimes I fill it with Reiki energy to make it even “safer”).
I had nevery heard of Hildegard’s Flu Powder, I’ll look into it (I don’t get flu shots either).
Great advice and something we should all keep in mind. When the H1N1 first came out, I was concerned because I was taking a medication that deliberately lowers your immune system so I was at risk of infection during that time.
In terms of good hygiene, I still see people who don’t wash their hands and cover their mouths when they cough and sneeze. That is so basic and would help a great deal if they did.
Marelisa,
Are people still wearing masks in Panama? I am not too sure if masks actually do a good job in the prevention part. What are your thoughts?
I’m glad to know that you are using a protective shield around you. I don’t make it a habit before going out or at the start of my day. I should!
I’m not sure if Hildegard’s Flu Powder is really sold in retail stores but I’d think a formulation that is herbal and antiviral can be easily purchased, if you are interested.
Take care,
Evelyn
Carla,
It’s great that you are aware of your increased risk while taking your specific medication. Yes, basic good hygiene needs to be practiced. My kids are being reminded over and over again about what these are, in school.
Take care,
Evelyn
Hi Evelyn,
Sounds like you had a fun holiday, Club med is such fun.
Great advice you have given here. I decided when it first started being written up and broadcast here in Australia that I was going to be immune to any type of flu. What we think about we attract and staying away from crowded ares is good too.I have seen the Hidegard brand in health shops here in Australia.
There is also another brand I get from Golden Glow called Immune Boost with Andrographis.
Let’s continue to attract great health
Namaste

I don’t know if I can let go of my coffee, but I do take my vitamin C now, and I really like the shield protection method. Thanks for these useful and timely tips!
What a wonderful post, and yes I laughed when I read “hogged headlines.” I’m going to send this to a friend of mine, who worries a lot of illness in her body.
I agree on many of your points. I avoid flu shots, reading the news, and all that other stuff that I feel poisons my mind & body.
Thanks for putting this together!
Hi Evelyn,
I am always weary of flu shots because you are basically injecting yourself with a virus and the side-effects are numerous but no one ever mentions that. So I rather resort to natural remedies and protecting myself from negative stuff.
I’m always a fan of boosting my immune system.
I hope you share a video on Qigong, once you nail it down.
I take a pretty extreme set of supplements based on the book 10 Years Younger (and 15,000 people at the time.) I have the list I’m taking on my post from the book. I think supplements help the most when your low in areas.
Beyond garlic, I like the fact you can measure the inflammation factor on sites like nutritiondata.com. Although I haven’t found an easy way to put it into practice yet, I like the idea of increasing anti-inflammatory foods and increasing nutritional density of foods across the spectrum, based on drfuhrman.com. I haven’t shifted to this approach yet, but I’ve seen some colleagues that have and their results are amazing. Apparently, Dr. Fuhrman’s approach helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, as well as reverse some serious diseases (all based on getting your body’s systems back into their best fighting shape.)
The most practical countermeasures I’ve seen for swine flu seem to be avoidance, a mask, and washing your hands.
Hi Evelyn – I’m with you on the vaccinations – I don’t ever have ‘em.
My not-so-secret miracle treatment for infections is olive leaf extract, made from fresh olive leaves – it’s very powerful. It is grown and made in Australia. Do you know olive trees grow to be very old and never get bacterial or viral infections?
It was incredible seeing all the people wearing masks in the emergency department of the hospital when I took Frank in – so much fear. I was coughing a bit myself, but suppressed it so I wouldn’t have to wear a mask! Cheers Evelyn – R
Hey Suzie,
You are so lucky to be living in Australia where even the Hidegard brand is readily available. It seems like we share the same philosophy that the best defense is really to build up immunity.
Oh yes, to continued good health!
Evelyn
Jocelyn,
I am glad that you like the idea of putting up a protection shield. Visualization is a powerful tool!
Blessings,
Evelyn
Megan,
Yes, swine news hogging headlines continues even in our papers the last few days. I’m glad that you are avoiding the news and all negative stuff, thus reducing the amount of toxins.
Good health always,
Evelyn
Nadia,
You brought up a good point. No one appears to mention the side effects of taking the flu vaccine. I don’t recall reading anything in the papers about this part.
Thanks!
Evelyn
J.D.,
I doubt that I can put anything on video for Qigong yet!! I have only just begun my research and looking into the technique. I’ve only got so much time. Hence, I want to make sure that I will be able to commit to the practice. Nevertheless, thank you for your interest. If I become a master, I will definitely publish a demonstration video.
I have done a number of research in the past about anti-inflammatory foods too. I’m also a believer of having an alkaline diet. I’m also in the midst of shifting my diet – an ongoing process – to a healthier version. It’s so much easier with myself working from home. I can survive on fruits and vegetables for a big part of my week.
To your good health always,
Evelyn
Robin,
I need to make a trip to Australia and see an olive tree myself. Olive leaves extract are commercially available here in Singapore, of course. But it will be nice to actually see a tree that is strong and known to be able to withstand infections. Oh…in case you don’t already know….I have a thing for trees.
I would imagine that I will be fearful too, seeing so many people with masks in an emergency ward. I’m glad to know that Frank is okay. Hope you didn’t choke while trying to suppress your cough!!
Take care! And send my regards to Frank for me
Evelyn
Hi Evelyn,
We had a swine flu scare a couple of months ago and every once in awhile we’ll hear of another case, but the scare is pretty much over for now.
I agree, washing our hands and staying away from crowds is a great idea. I’m fascinated by the “shield of protection”. It sounds like such an easy “procedure” to protect us from viruses. I’ll have to give it a try.
Evelyn,
Yay. Thank you for putting this calm and quiet energy out around H1N1. I think it not healthy how much hype has been built up thus causing more attention and fear. I found your post thoughtful in its addressing of the subject and your tips are excellent ones.
This year I have had great success with Astragalus Root…do you know of it or have any thoughts around it.
And of course, laughter is a known immune system builder by increasing our immunoglobulinA levels…so it is nice to know that by turning away from the stress/anxiety of the news around H1N1 and creating joy we are actually making ourselves healthier!
Lol.. Da Pig Floo is on da loose! Great article.
Fabulous post. Really important. I don’t watch television, and i only read the NYT on Sunday, so largely I’ve been shielded from the hysteria, which is fine by me. Not feeling anxious and not feeling worried or stressed about the situation, I believe, is crucial to maintaining a healthy immune system.
I drink the juice of a lemon daily. I also take 2 TBSP twice daily of apple cider vinegar, and 1/2 tsp turmeric in water daily. I haven’t been sick in ages.
Thanks for this fabulous post. I especially like the bit about wrapping yourself in an egg. I do this from time to time, a light sphere…
Good stuff.
Evelyn,
This is a post I really needed to read right now! Needing to travel for work has made me very aware of the need to protect myself against the H1N1 virus, and like you I don’t like synthetic solutions, so your tips come in very useful. I also like the multi-faceted angle you take about protecting ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually / mentally. Very timely post indeed!
@Barbara, I’m glad to know that the “swine flu” scare has died down from where you come from. Using shields of protection sound like an idea that a lot of us will dismiss for its simplicity. But it works! I use it for protecting myself due to the akashic record reading work that I do.
@Kathy, thanks for the tip on Astragalus Root. Nope, I have not heard of it. Does it come in a ready-to-eat form or must I cook it? Oh yes, laughter is the best medicine!! Your suggestion is excellent!
@Molly, the concoction of apple cidar vinegar and tumeric sounds interesting. These are stuff that I already have in my kitchen. I must try the tumeric in water though…..not sure if I will like the taste. I use tumeric mainly for cooking.
@Daphne, I can guess how scary it must be to be on a plane with an ongoing flu scary. I’m glad that you enjoyed the tips on this post. I could not find information that addressed all angles (including energetic ones) in one article and decided to write it out myself. With my kids starting school this week, I thought I’d better get my post out!
Astragalus comes in a capsule form. We have had great success with it this winter in cold season! Thanks for your suggestions.
This is good stuff, and if more people would accept the FACT that illness is a choice at the level of spirit, or at least the level of mind, things like the “Swine Flu Scare” would not exist.
I too have a simple program for avoiding illness. And I use dowsing and other tactics to help me stay on track and even to create an affirmative vibration on a larger scale.
You’ve just reminded me to start taking my Vitamin C again. I have a bottle of tablets on the top of the fridge so I need to put it down somewhere I’ll be apt to see it on a daily basis.
Thanks. And stay well.
@Katie, thank you for sharing about astragalus. I’ll check on it!
@Aaron, you’ve certainly shared very wise insights. I can’t agree more! Good for you in having a program to use and to stay on track!
@Jannie, oh yes…do remember to take your vitamins! Stay well too!
Thanks for the reminder about the shield and Vitamin C. I haven’t heard of the Hildegard’s Flu Powder before. I do use aromatherapy for my sinus condition so that I can breathe at night when I go to bed.
I was happy to see that among the body tips are ones that I practice already. I also love a strong anti-oxidant for removing toxins form the body.
Excellent advice Evelyn! This whole swine flu is being blown so out of proportion I feel, too much fear mongering that is for sure, and not enough honesty about how we can really protect ourselves.
I think a mass vaccine will be inevitable if the numbers continue the way they are, and that is why I too wrote abou this critical topic to help people shield themselves naturally. Vaccines, especially the flu type have done so much more harm than good, but most people don’t know that.
Anyway if you are interested in reading what I had to say abou them and the natural defenses we can offer ourselves they can be found here:
1. http://evolvingwellness.com/posts/675/10-ways-to-protect-yourself-against-the-swine-flu/
2. http://evolvingwellness.com/posts/714/something-is-fishy-about-the-swine-flu-pandemic/
I will look into the flu powder but feel I must get the flu shot because I am a nurse and need that “short term” coverage as you call it! Yes, to protect myself but also to protect my patients. What precautions do you recommend when flying? I am flying to Texas late Sept.
As a former (30 yrs.) spec. ed parapro, I really appreciate this info. Not for myself…but I still socialize w/many school children who aren’t hygenically focused (unless constantly reminded) and I have a brand new baby grandson, who I’m safeguarding from uneccessary potential contaminates. I’m wondering how we can keep our standard of unbiased integrated socialization w/out eliminating people who are potential carriers. I just don’t see how it’s possible. Not enough funding and education to secure safety. Been there done that.
