“A vision for happiness lays the foundation for a life well-lived in love, peace and harmony.” – Abundance Tapestry
Many of us start the new year with making resolutions. More recently, there is an increasing number who lean towards making inner-directed intentions rather than set externally-driven goals that are forgotten as soon as they have been made. Well, whether you are making intentions, resolutions or goals, I propose having an overall vision for happiness.
A vision of happiness is a great one to have. With such a vision in mind, we are reminded about being joyful in the present moment. Having made the choice, we refuse to let our egos get in the way of our happiness. We are less likely to go into bitter complaints, worry and stress.
Make a Vision Board for Happiness
Avoid putting it off. Start on the vision of happiness as early as you can in life. Better yet, introduce the idea of happiness as a choice to children.
Last month, I volunteered my services for a Buddhist Youth Camp. My girlfriend, who was organizing the event for 30 children, requested that I teach the children on visioning. I readily agreed.
And so, I gave a class on visioning over two hours. I taught them about using the power of their mind and heart for purposeful dreaming. For their vision boards, the children worked on the affirmations for happiness. They shared about what actions they would undertake to cultivate the values of gentleness, kindness and peace. Their vision boards turned out colorful, vivid and interesting.
In the end, I could not be certain who had benefited more from the class. I might have imparted knowledge but the children were a delight to be around with. I was filled with a sense of joy in the company of children who were eager to learn, curious, creative and imaginative.
The children have certainly got what it takes to be a light in the world. Their smiles are brilliant, magnetic and infectious. I hope that they will go on to spread happiness throughout their lives.
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” – Buddha
How to Create a Vision Board for Happiness
Feeling inspired? If you would like to make a vision board for happiness, here are some tips:
1. Identify the top 3 values that would help support the vision for happiness. Values that you can consider include: peace, authenticity, generosity, charity, self-love, love for all, connectedness, joy, possibility, courage and integrity.
Most importantly, the values should connect with your heart.
2. Next, describe 3 actions that would help support each value.
3. Paste a picture of yourself in the middle of the board. Choose a picture of yourself smiling, feeling joyous.
4. Find pictures that would help support each value and paste them on your vision board. You can also find pictures for the actions that you have described.
5. Stick any embellishments that would create a lively vision board.
6. Place your vision board in a visible spot.
7. Apply the 3 actions regularly.
My Vision Board for Happiness
I chose a picture of myself in meditation. Having derived several benefits, I believe that meditation lays the path to true happiness. The image I have chosen for my vision board is also a picture that was taken while I was in the park, in the midst of nature and peaceful surroundings. Hence, for the value on peace, I had a leaf pasted onto my vision board.
For gentleness, I could only think of the folds of the petals of a flower. I added a note to remind myself to practice loving kindness. I also drew a kite, as kites meant a sense of freedom and joy. Finally, I added some glitter glue to denote the golden aura of happiness.
As an afterthought, it would be nice to include an image of a candle or a sea of candles to remind myself about Buddha’s quote on sharing happiness.
