How to Create A Personal Energy Shield For Protection

by Evelyn on February 15, 2011

Sphere of Happiness
If you find yourself constantly drained by others, is an empath and/or sensitive to energy interferences, then learning how to create a personal energy shield can be extremely helpful. I shared this as tip #57 of my 70 Ways for Self Care. Under the blog comments, Lei – a reader to the article – asked how she could create one as she has found herself surrounded by toxic people.

I will be responding to her question in two parts; one specifically on how to create a personal energy shield and the other, on how to handle toxic relationships, in a second article in two days’ time.

Creating A Personal Energy Shield

Each and every one of us has the ability to create personal energy shields. Since we are all energy, shields are simply an extension of ourselves. In the movie, Star Wars, we know energy as The Force. As narrated in the movie, The Force is a binding, metaphysical and ubiquitous power in the universe of the galaxy. Yoda points out that “a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force” while training Luke Skywalker; Yoda also explains that “you must feel the Force around you.”

The Star Wars movie has a lot to teach us about energy, if you haven’t realized. Here is an example. Being connected as One at source, we can get affected by the negative energies of another. This happens when we have a weak energetic boundary. We allow others to invade into our “space” or field. An energetic boundary is an invisible shield that screens incoming and outgoing energy. It keeps our own energy field within a closed, safe and contained system. Holistic well-being arises when we have healthy, vibrant and luminous personal energy.

The first thing to know is that no one can invade our “space” without our permission. Hence, a big part of energy leakage is caused by the failure on our part to take actions to protect ourselves. Oh yes, it is our personal responsibility. We cannot shift the entire blame to others if we leak energy. It is very important that we take steps for self-care and protection.

Signs of Energy Leakage

So, what are the signs of energy leakage? Signs can be one or more of the following: feeling persistently tired, a sense of chaotic energy, constantly ill, heaviness and migraines as a result of contact with others.

An empath or someone highly sensitive and compassionate can be like a “sponge”. Empaths are prone to soaking up unwanted energy from others. They unconsciously absorb the feelings, difficulties or pain of others. When they do, they carry an extra load of negative energy that can affect their clarity.

The thing is to remain vigilant if this is the case for you. You need to learn how to shield yourself appropriately, even whilst you are sympathetic to the problems of another and wish to help.

Types of Energy Shields

There are many ways that you can create personal energy shields, such as visualizing that you are inside a cobalt-blue egg, circle of love, roses and so on. All variations are just as effective if and only if conscious intention is used to create one. Random thinking does not count. You won’t also want to create a weak and sloppy one with holes. The idea is to focus your mind and use your senses to experience the shield.

I share one variation that will be useful for Lei, since she needs to protect herself from toxic people.

Pink Rose Quartz and Mirrors Protection Shield

1. Be quiet for a while.

2. Release any stresses or tensions that you feel and relax.

3. Take in a few deep breaths.

4. Focus your mind on creating an energy shield using light from source.

5. For this shield, visualize and tangibly feel yourself surrounded by a wall of mirrors – around, over and under. The mirrors face out. Hence, if there is negative energy that is directed towards you, it is reflected back outwards.

6. Your shield is completely sealed so that no external negative energy can enter.

7. At the same time, make the intention to allow only love to pass through both ways.

8. With you inside this shield, you may want to visualize yourself surrounded and embraced by the energy of pink rose quartz.

9. See, sense and feel the completeness of the shield for a few moments. Hold that in place with your intention.

10. For your future reference, make a mental note of how the shield feels like. This will make it easy for you to bring it back into existence whenever you need it. You will need to repeat steps 1-9 as the shield dissipates over time.

Extra tip #1. You can also call upon your spiritual team for extra protection from all people who are toxic and negative. Don’t be surprised when you receive evidence of their support.

Extra tip #2. Before you step out of your room in the mornings, make creating personal energy shields as part of your getting up ritual! If you perceive that there are any gaps, cracks or holes, just repair it with new mirrors.

Extra tips #3: The Mirrors Protection Shield is also excellent if you need to go into a crowded space. Protect yourself before entering a bus, train or shopping mall.

Share Your Favorite Energy Shield

Share your favorite visualization for an energy shield, if you have one. Alternatively, share about any other energetic tools that you use for protection.

And lastly, may The Force be with you :-)

Hi Evelyn great post again as usual…Yes I’ve been practicing this shielding one’s self from intruders..I am really sensitive to negative energy. One time I forgot to do so, I went to a friend’s house(my first time there) and spent more than an hour chatting with her. The next day I was down with flu and was in bed for 4 days. I lost a lot of weight. Since then, I never went again to her house and do shielding almost every day. Thanks for reminding us. More power to you. Are you an artist? I notice that your work is very attractive, wish I had the same talent. I just bought a sketch pad and started drawing. Inside me, saying I can express my thoughts through it. Well, I just have to say that you inspired me. God bless..Lovelots

Hi Evelyn,
Thanks so much for this great post. It is just what I need. The past couple weeks I’ve had to deal with one negative person in paticular and I’ve had sporadic shakes in my hands. I’m an empath and definately a highly sensitive person and I really need to work on my sheild. I love the idea of surrounding myself with the mirrors. Brilliant! Thanks for your help Evelyn!

Hi Evelyn — this is definitely a very relevant topic for me — the challenge for me in my own practice has been to tell someone else the sensations I feel when I’m around them, even when those aren’t sensations that I find warm or pleasant — and to do it in a way that doesn’t blame them for how I’m feeling. It’s a departure from the “normal” way of communicating with people, but if I don’t tell people how I feel when I’m around them, in a way I’m actually depriving them of the gift of my empathy.

Hello Evelyn
Thank you very much for the information and help you provide.
I am also an empath and lately, in part due to your website and meditation, I have been standing up for myself. The people who are used to taking advantage are a bit taken aback and I have to deal with guilty feelings as I feel I should maintain my support for them. I am working towards regaining my power over myself and I thank you again for your help.
best wishes

Evelyn, thanks for sharing this! It’s true, no one can make us feel anything. Sometimes the only thing we can control is how we react and take in a situation. But we have pretty big control in this! And the way we choose to feel about something may very well have a lot to do with what results come out of it! Thanks for sharing!

I love this line Evelyn, “The first thing to know is that no one can invade our “space” without our permission.”

So empowering!

Hi Evelyn,

Great use of Star Wars and Yoda to show us how to create our personal energy shields! 😀

Being INFJ and all, I used to be more sensitive to the emotions around me and picked them up like a sponge. It also did not really help because I always tried to help my friends in pain. If I was not careful, I would also end up absorbing their pain. I guess over the years I learned to detach myself. Nothing fancy like your energy shield, just detachment and monitoring the way I thought and felt. At any point where it was too much, I would back off to take time to recharge.

That said, I think it is a great idea to have an energy shield. I would prefer a simple one and just visualize a protective bubble that reflects negativity and allows love to pass through.

Thank you for sharing this article! :)

Aloha Evelyn,

I sincerely appreciate your response to my post. I have been seeking answers to my questions on how to react sensibly to others that do not share the same views or values as me, and it’s been quite difficult yet you put things into perspective in such a clear and concise way. I have never heard about shielding, and love the concept of the mirrors protection shield. I truly believe in Karma and the mirrors shield reminds me that what goes around comes around. Just today, I had to deal with “the” toxic people at work, one person in particular that seems to thrive on drama she creates, and I am no longer bothered that I have to go to work everyday to open the door to toxicity because I am going to practice shielding from here on out until it becomes natural for me. I look forward to your next post in how to handle toxic relationships for I am experienced in that as well. I realize I may have been attracting myself to these toxic people, for I know that I am a person whose lived with toxic thoughts for a long time, but 2011 is the year I chose to work on my mental and spiritual growth with hopes of incorporating a more calm, clear, balanced spirit filled with love, hope, inspiration, gratitude and non-judgemental views of others. Thank you for all your wonderful posts. I’m halfway done with creating my vision board for this year (I create at least one yearly), and can’t wait to look back at all the wonderful goals I’ve accomplished much to the help of all your wonderful tips, advice and words of wisdom. :)

Love and Light,

I have always been very sensitive to negativity around me, I can remember when I was growing up I was always so upset when others around me would argue or get angry. Often I would be more upset than the people involved, much like the analogy of the sponge that you used. After they would have moved on from the negativity or argument I would be upset long after they’d forgotten about it.

I really like the visualization of the mirror not allowing anything negative in. It reminds me of a silly saying my friends and I said to each other when we were young children: “I’m rubber, you’re glue; what you say bounces off me and sticks to you.” I am hopeful that the mirror visualization will help me with the negativity around me.

Thank you, I’m really enjoying your site. I’m glad that I found you through your comment at CYT.

Just some food for thought here…but, isn’t saying that we need ‘protection’ in the first place…and using words like “be careful” a very fearful mind space to be in?
To me, the need for protection indicates and implies that there is something to be afraid of…something to fear. It seems to me that using ‘protective bubbles’ is just a way of creating more fear in our lives whilst thinking we are helping ourselves!

I’d be interested to hear your point of view on this…

Great post Evelyn,

I’m very empathetic of people around me, but I generally have trouble with absorbing or balancing others’ energy. I appreciated the post, I’ll have to try it out!

Hi Evelyn, thankyou so much for your blog and for this post, I have found it immensely helpful.

I was wondering if I could ask you your advice on my situation? I am a highly sensitive person and I am having real difficulties protecting myself from negative energies and in particular “invasive” people.

You wrote that “when we have a weak energetic boundary. We allow others to invade into our “space” or field”. At times, I honestly feel like I have little, almost no energetic boundary! I feel like I am wide open and even the most slightly insensitive person can cause me immense discomfort (if I am feeling particularly sensitive in that moment). I am most affected when I am pre-menstrual (which is around 8 days a month) during this time, I feel like my energetic boundary is almost completely gone – I feel raw to the world and in need of much protection. When I am not feeling pre-menstrual I do actually feel like I have some protection – but it still feels like it could be stronger.

One example, I recently did a singing workshop where there was a big, loud, brash kind of guy in the group and although I could see that he had a good heart and was basically a kind person, I found his energy to be really scattered, overbearing and flying all over the place. My experience was of feeling like “stuff” was being hurled at me (on an energetic level). He was also a bit invasive physically and at one point actually kept grabbing my arm and hand when he seemed to think that I did not understand an instruction (I was actually recalling at the idea of having to be in physical contact with him! And so was hesitating at the instruction – and then he just grabbed me!).

I can clearly see that he was not that invasive, however I was premenstrual and felt quite uncomfortable with him in the group – I could not fully relax and “be” 100% there. I felt like I had to be on guard somewhat the whole time.

My current dilemma is that I actually feel like the universe is actively sending me people like this on a regular basis to test me. I feel like I am constantly being confronted with people who I experience as “invading” my space in some way (either energetically or physically or both). I feel like there is some kind of big life lesson that I need to learn from all this.

(I have had some experiences with some very invasive people recently also – much more invasive that the guy described above, and one person who I actually think was crazy. And I actually believe that she was addicted to negative energy and the more she could feel me reacting to her, the more she seemed to pour negativity on me! She was the worst. But again, I believe that everything happens for a reason and I have an important lesson to learn here). What amazes me is just how often this is cropping up in my life at the moment.

I am in absolute awe of people who I know are extremely sensitive, yet are able to “hold their space” in the midst of all kinds of dissident energies around them – people who seem unaffected by others moods and are able to carry on their merry way. I can feel how big and strong their energy fields are. They are so strong that they can be around many negative energys/people and remain incredibly compassionate and loving towards them – they seem to be nestled within their own safe space. I don’t feel like I have this safe space inside me (or at least it does not feel very strong).

I on the other hand often feel a lot of hostility and resentment towards people who I experience as invasive. Mostly I seek to avoid the person, however if they are in a group I wish to be a part of – this can prove an ineffective and anti-social strategy, and I know it affects the whole group as people can usually sense my discomfort (as I am almost incapable of hiding it).

Maybe the more I react to the situation, the most hostile I feel, the more I attract it into my life? Sometimes I feel like really negative, invasive people are actually seeking out people like me to fuel them somehow. I don’t know?

What ever is happening, I just really need to learn how to protect myself so that I can be in the same space as these people and not let them affect me so much.

I found it very interesting that you wrote; “The first thing to know is that no one can invade our “space” without our permission. Hence, a big part of energy leakage is caused by the failure on our part to take actions to protect ourselves. Oh yes, it is our personal responsibility. We cannot shift the entire blame to others if we leak energy. It is very important that we take steps for self-care and protection.”

I found this to be very insightful and relevant for me as I do feel that this whole situation is in part a teaching around moving beyond “victimhood thinking” for me and also learning to let go of the need to feel in control of those around me and the situation I am in.

I just wish I did not get so frustrated when I feel like my space is being invaded. It feels like a really strong trigger situation for me.

I really liked the mirror protection and I will definitely try it. But I have to say that most of the time, when I am in the situation of feeling overwhelmed by an invasive energy I seem to forget about every protection technique I know and I feel kind of like a deer in headlights – unable to move even – I just feel so trapped.

I think I need to start incorporating protection meditations into my daily mediation practice so that I am protected every single day.

I would dearly appreciate any further advice or teachings you might be able to offer as I feel so overwhelmed by the situation at the moment.

Are there any books you could recommend?

Thankyou again, It is so wonderful that people such as yourself are offering such abundance, love and wisdom with such generosity – thankyou so much!

Warmest, Becci

Hello, I have practicing shielding. I am an empath. I had gotten anger one day and I was atempting to shield with light ,I automactically saw a ring of fire around me. I am a fire sign of Leo . So I was wondering is fire a shielding source also?

Thanks for the post! My mother taught me this when I was very young. I was very sensitive and reclusive as a child, often too sick or tired to go to school. I have since forgotten about this technique, until my grandmother referred me to this page.

I now live in another country, very different from my own, with language barriers being the least of my concerns. I often find myself too drained to leave my apartment, but now I hope to utilize your method once again! I was also taught the light blue egg of light.

Hello! I also feel energy pretty intensely. It could get overwhelming. Recently I had an encounter at a store with a lady whos energy was really intense in a negative way. Usually I get a fluctuation of energy going almost like a panic attack, it takes me quite a while to release it. A day after the incident, I felt sick, dizzy and disoriented with a headache. I know I can not avoid such energies. Does that happen also when we absorb others energies? Completely drained. Please help.
